Unit 7 Blog

Hello All,

I hope everyone is doing well this week.  I completed the meditation exercise on track 4.  I felt this to be very beneficial and of course very relaxing.  For the exercise, we had to visualize someone, dead or alive, male or female that we love, honor and share a special connection with and observe them in our mind.  I chose to visualize about my mother.  It then asked us to reflect on this person, their love, joy and compassion towards things.  Doing this exercise, I felt myself becoming more positive.  I did this at work during break, because I wanted to see if it would help be relieve some of my work stress and negativity and it did.  I think that mindfulness or meditation has fostered an increase in my psychological or spiritual wellness because every time I’m stressed, I tend to listen to these tracks and it always seems to get me past the issue.  I can continue to apply these practices in my daily life for greater health and wellness by observing myself more and when I’m having an issue, correct it before it gets too far.

The saying “one cannot lead another where one has not gone himself,” means a lot to me.  For someone working in the field, especially one in the health and wellness field, I don’t think its right for someone to talk and counsel people on eating right and exercise when they don’t eat right or exercise themselves.  I know it happens out there, but I just don’t believe its right.  That’s one of the many reasons I had to change my lifestyle.  I can’t see myself speaking about nutrition and I don’t watch what I eat.  It’s like the saying, practice what you preach.  I would feel very obligated to my clients to be developing my health physically, mentally and spiritually.  I would want them to see me as fit, healthy and stable so they can look up to me or use me as their motivation.  I can implement psychological and spiritual grown in my personal life by using meditation and prayer.  These are the two things that have really worked for me.

  1. Hey Jamie!
Isn't it amazing how just a few minutes of quiet, contemplative practice can make everything else work itself out?! I think it's great you are able to use this during work to relieve stress. It shows this is exactly how it's supposed to work.

Changing my lifestyle has taken some time and I continue to work on it every day. I think that's a key concept to express to clients; nothing happens or changes overnight. We must be diligent in our intention and work towards our goals. Even the small steps count!
    Keep up the fabulous work!

  2. Hi Jamie - After reading your post, I again read what you posted on your profile. I wondered if you found a difference in the level of balance you achieve with the meditation exercises vs the music in your life? I, too, have often used music to return me to center or to reach a level of subconscious connection. What do you think?

  3. Hi Jamie!
I think stress is the number one problem for every one. If I was to receive care from someone, yeah, I would like that person to know what they are doing. If you were overweight and teaching me to eat right, of course I would just let all that blow out my mind and not take you seriously.

I, myself need to make an effort to practice these exercises more often. Even though, I feel that I am a good person, I still feel like something is missing in my life.

  4. Hi Jamie,

As a fitness consultant I understand the importance of what you are saying and what this statement means. People look to us as their role models. If we do not practice what we tell them, then we lose all credibility.

I truly enjoyed this last visualization exercise. In fact, I believe it would be an effective method in a weight loss program.

  5. Hello Jamie,

I am glad to hear that this exercise helped you while you were at work. We are all aware of th stresses that our work lives put on us, so I think that it is great that you were able to do the exercise and then feel more positive at work.
I agree that a person in the health and wellness field should have to be able to back up what they are telling their clients to do. I see it as an if you can't do it then why or how am I supposed to, type of situation.
